Make season tickets (incl annual ticket) less expensive. How can you carry on increasing fares when most people are not getting a pay rise?!
There is no justification for the yearly increase in fares we have to accept, when most people have had no pay increases for quite some time or even had to take a pay cut. Passengers have no choice and are forced to use FCC. You are slowly forcing lower paid people to give up trying to work in London because the exorbitant train fares simply do not make it economically viable anymore. When will you remember you are meant to be providing public transport, not transport for a wealthy elite?!
85 votesHi there, and thank you for your suggestion
We appreciate that this is a difficult time for many of our customers and no one wants to see an increase in fares.
Fares have always been set against the Retail Price index (RPI), the rise was RPI +1% This forms part of the government’s wider strategy of moving the cost of running the country’s railways away from the tax payer and towards those buying tickets. In the longer-term, the industry is working together to keep on cutting costs as a way of helping to limit future fare rises and offering better value for money for taxpayers.
We do aim to set unregulated fares at a level which encourage people to use our trains and we have kept most of the fares the same or set them even lower this year.
It is worth pointing out that all of the… more

Barcode tickets
To remove reliance on paper tickets, there could be a trial using barcode ticketing for mobile devices.
This trial would use the ‘Rail Tickets’ mobile retail application (available on iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia). You use the app to purchase your ticket, which would then then stored as a barcode on your phone - readable by sensors at the station ticket barriers.
At first, this would only be available for certain types of daily tickets between Cambridge and London Kings Cross. If successful, the idea could be opened up to other journeys.
Do you think there’s any value in this… more

Update on this project; 30th March 2012
We will be conducting a trial shortly on direct services between London King’s Cross and Cambridge on Barcode tickets.
Customer will be able to purchase tickets from their phone using our application, the phone then becomes the ticket in essence. Special ticket readers are being installed at London King’s Cross and Cambridge to read them.
As soon as the trail is complete we will update you further.

Pay compensation to take into account journey times
Pay compensation rates which acknowledge the actual journy time to make it more fair. For example, if I am delayed 20 minutes on a journey that should only take 20 minutes then that is a 100% delay. However, a delay of 20 minutes on a journey which takes an hour is only a 33% delay. Whilst they are both unacceptable, having a flat rate of 30 mins delay for everyone is ridiculous.
38 votesThanks for your suggestion.
We compensate customers under the delay repay scheme, which industry Ombudsman such as London TravelWatch and Passenger Focus are looking to make standard in all Rail franchise as the compensation we offer is actually generous as we pay out for all delays, such as fatalities and weather related issues, under other compensation schemes you would not be reimbursed for this. The delay repay scheme has been set to activated after 30 minutes of disruptions. The scheme we offer forms part of our Passenger Charter which is set within our franchise agreement with the Department for Transport and can not be modified.
Based on this your idea has been declined, however if you do have any other Ideas that you think we can implement then let us know.

FCC Season Tickets on Oyster
As an alternative to barcode tickets for mobiles, allow FCC season tickets to be added to Oyster cards.
This brings with it many benefits:
For an occasional tube user like myself, you would only have to carry a single card - rather than an Oyster card, photo ID and a paper season ticket.
No more grubby, dog eared, tired paper season tickets by the end of the month.
Quicker passage for all users through barriers, therefore less queuing and greater passenger throughput.
Savings in stock of paper tickets and printing across the FCC network that dovetails with London.

22 votesHi there Joshua.
Thanks you very much for your suggestion.
The Oyster system does not allow for our season tickets to be added to the cards, so this just isn’t possible. However a Department for Transport (DfT) initiative has just been announced which will introduce a smartcard scheme to most of our network. This will allow a FCC season ticket to be added to the card and the ability to use PAYG in the London area. The project has just stared within the DfT and is due to go live 2014.
I’m really sorry that we can’t actually progress your idea, but again thanks for your suggestion and if you have any more ideas please feel free to leave them on the site

Advertise better that people with an annual railcard receive a complimentary ticket
I just found this by luck looking at your website, the person at the ticket machine did not tell me or give me information about the benefit of the annual ticket

Provide Terms and Conditions for ticket as default at point of sale
When selling a ticket at a booking office, staff should offer customers the opportunity to get a print off of the restrictions on the ticket with regards to the time of trains that they can use. A future development would be for this to be printed on the back of the ticket.
An example would be a Super Duper Tuesdays Only Off Peak Dog Ticket from Crinkley Bottom to London Bucks Palace
Tuesdays Only
Crinkley Bottom - London Bucks Palace
After 1030
London Bucks Palace - Crinkley Bottom
After 1030 Before 1600 After 1859

Programme your ticket machines to include groupsave, line2line and other options that can currently only be done at the ticket counter
The old Thameslink ticket machines had the groupsave option and as several of your stations are unstaffed it would prove more convenient for people who use those stations on a regular basis.

Hi there,
Thanks for your suggestion.
Many machines already have this option available. Others are being upgraded to offer this.
If you have any further ideas or suggestions, please feel free to leave them on this site.

Make it easier to view all available ticket types online.
It's currently very complicated to check fares online, involving putting in specific times into the trainline link, and even then many options aren't shown. For example, there is no way to show the price of a weekly season ticket, and there doesn't seem to be any way to find out the price of a plusbus either. I'm starting a temp job next week, and I wanted to find details of weekly ticket options, so I could compare with driving and taking the bus to decide how to get there. Currently this is impossible.

with stations such as radlett, make buying a season ticket cost the same as using an oyster on a daily basis!
Borehamwood station is only a further 5 minute drive from radlett station so why charge 350 x the amount! should cost the same or at least be similar!

Sell tickets for point to point travel over the internet using all First group franchises and sell the like low cost airlines
FCC being part of the First group could sell tickets over the internet from point to point travel like Stage Coach group do,using all the First group buses and train franchises and sell them like Ryan Air do the earlyer you book the better the prices you pay!

Please make it easier to select the cheapest ticket
At City Thameslink I wanted to buy a single ticket to Gatwick off peak. The choices were confusing: "Not Underground" and another "Not" which I can't recall - maybe "Not Gatwick Express". I clicked through and one was about £4 dearer than the other. Why not have an option saying "Cheapest ticket". It would be easy to unnecessarily buy the more expensive one.

Create a new type of annual railcard for people who travel always on the same trains (as most commuters do).
This will allow FCC to have a better idea of how many people will travel on specific trains and also reduce the fee commuters pay as they will only be allowed to travel on for example from 7 to 8 in the morning and 6 and 7 in the evening.

Is it possible to simplify ticket buying as it's a little confusing as to get the best fare
When buying a ticket to Staines (For Thorpe Park) I found there was 3 different screens for options of ticket I could have, The minimal being 20 pounds (Ish) and the maximum being 40 pounds (ish), I have no clue what one I will need and what one offers the best value for the time I need. And being the top price 40 pounds I would rather not go. I don't exactly want to get to the other end and have them say, oh you need another 20 pounds to add to this... It's a bit confusing! Maybe simplify the… more

Offer more flexible, cost effective tickets for part time London commuters.
Although Carnet tickets are trying to bridge the gap, they are nowhere near cost effective enough and not even available from all stations. As someone that makes the commute from Harlington to London 3 days a week, if I brought a Carnet ticket from the nearest station that still covers my route (Bedford) a season ticket is still the most cost effective option even with 4 redundant days the ticket would not be used. With more an more staff working flexibly from home or part time, train companies need to respond with a more viable option for part time commuters,… more

Single ticket for train and bus to North Norfolk Coast
The 'Coast Hopper' bus service that goes from Kings Lynn to Hunstanton and behind is excellent. Would it be possible to create a single ticket for rail and bus travel. E.g. so that I could get a single ticket from Downham Market.

Provide an off-peak carnet for use with Senior (or other) Railcard.
Please can you provide an off-peak carnet or something similar for Railcard users. At present I have to choose between the relative convenience of buying 10 tickets at once, for 90% of the normal price, or buying tickets every day for 60% with my Senior Railcard.
Ideally this should be implemented on the Smart Card mentioned in another thread, as it's so very easy (especially for us oldies ;0) to forget to write the date on. But a paper-based carnet would be good in the short term.
I don't expect to get 10% off the senior fare - I'd be… more

Have more self-service ticket machines at Hitchin station
Hitchin station is absolutely mad in the mornings, to the point where queueing passengers block the ticket barriers so people can't get through. There are already covered ticket machines outside, another two could be put next to the bus stop.

ticket machines must calculate fares accurately, inc gold card status + zones on paper season tickets; currently can't!
FCC must introduce more options at ticket machines (particularly at unmanned stations), to avoid: (a) customers as described ovecharged if they must buy a ticket before travelling; or (b) risk being fined if they reasonably travel first and expect to pay correct fare at destination. Inequitable if FCC does not introduce change!

How can...
Hertford North > Stevenage....2 stops £6.80 return
Hertford North > Cuffley....2 stops £4.70 returnSo that 3 min difference in length is worth £2.10.
Hertford North > Harringay...£10.60 return
But if you want to go 1 stop on...
Hertford North > Finsbury Park...£14.80Really, it costs you £4.20 to take a person one more stop?
Aside from the fact they're stupidly high prices anyway, those blatent examples of screwing your customers for every penny is the reason why so many people fare evade and you don't catch most of them. It's cheaper for me to drive to London and back… more
