Hi.
Our goal is for as many of our trains as possible to run on time, with as few delays or problems as possible. Of course, things do not always go as planned, and we know this causes frustration. Sometimes problems occur when we make a mistake, and sometimes as the result of other factors – often things controlled by the other companies and agencies that run the lines we use. It can be quite complicated. So, yes, we will keep trying to make the trains run on time, as you quite fairly suggest.
If you do have any other ideas please feel free to suggest then on this site.

Stop squishing us like sardines
Every morning seems to get worse, there isn't physically any more room on the train for us to move along. (Brighton - Bedford morning service)

We do understand how crowded it is on the TL route, hence the government investment for new longer trains, station upgrades, longer platform with the introduction the Thameslink Programme. New trains longer trains arrive in 2015

Turn down the heating at peak hours
Why are the heaters on full especially when the trains are full of passengers at rush hour? Most people get on the train with their outdoor coats, and there is insufficient space to remove them. When the train becomes so packed that further passengers cannot get on, having the heaters on makes it extremely uncomfortable, and possibly dangerous, for everyone in the carriage.
35 votesHi Simon
The heating actually works via thermostats, the driver has no way of turning the heat up or down, to an ambient temperature of 21 degrees.
The problem that we have is that the trains we have inherited and quite old, and the heating systems sometimes fail, if it’s boiling hot on the train it means a faulty thermostat, just report this and the train time and coach number this can be found above the internal doors. Each coach has it’s own thermostat which is why we need this information.
You can report any hot/cold trains to our customer relations team or via Twitter @Firstcc

Stickers showing where to store bikes on Electrostar trains
On FCC's older trains (the 319s?) between Brighton and London, I've seen useful stickers by certain doors, showing the locations of the spaces to stow bikes.
But on the the newer Electrostar trains (377s) I've seen, it's not clear where passengers with bikes should board. Are bikes supposed to be stored in the area near the accessible toilet, as on Southern 377s?
If this is the best location for bikes to be stored, some stickers on the doors (as used on older trains) would make it clearer to cycling passengers, and maybe leave more space in more crowded areas of… more

Put more Airline style seating on trains.
There need to be more airline style seats and fewer of the seats which mean you are sitting directly opposite someone. Airline seats give much better leg room, are less likely to be occupied by someone's bag, and it's a lot easier to get into and out of a seat on a
busy train when at a station on the airline style seats.
The few airline seats there are on the trains always seem to taken first, so the majority of passengers clearly prefer these types of seats17 votesHi David
Thank you very much for your suggestion.I don’t think we will be refitting any of the trains we lease as we are coming up to the end of our franchise.
New trains are in the process of being built as part of the Thameslink Programme, and I know that leg room is one of the things that the designers and builders of the trains will be looking at.
I’m really sorry we couldn’t help you out with your idea at this time, but if you have any other ideas please feel free to leave them on the site.

Light up the station names on the Welwyn route so you can see which station you are arriving at!
It is almost impossible to tell which station you are at on the Welwyn line at night as the station signs are so badly lit.

Stop using old trains with cramped seating and no tables
Comfort not profit please
13 votesWe have to use stock we have, there is no stock spare that we can use on either the GN or TL route. New trains are being built by the Rolling Stock Operators for us to lease, however they take a longtime to build be tested and rolled out. We expect them in 2015

Use of sanitising handwashing gel in toilets
An issue highlighted last year was that of water tanks on trains freezing and subsequently splitting in cold weather.
One way of solving this could be to introduce sanitising handwashing gel for customers to wash their hands and to the use freeze-resistant chemicals in toilets.
This should result in far fewer toilets on trains going out of service. Is this an acceptable change?
Does anyone have any objections to this proposal? Would you be happy using gel as opposed to water to wash your hands? Are there other solutions that may not have been considered?

Help the disabled
I noticed that timetables for the thameslink route show which services have disabled toilets onboard. Would it be possible to issue a supplement stationg the same for the Great Northern route?

Stopping at West Hampstead
Get more services that run fast between St Albans and St Pancas to stop at West Hampstead. Most of these fast services already either stop or slow to a crawl through West Hampstead anyway so I can't see why this can't be done especially at off-peak times.
est Hampstead is a major interchange with the Jubilee Line, London Overground and the buses.
We have the olympics at both Stratford and Wembley later this year so there will be a lot of your customers wanting to access the Jubilee Line, both these venues are more accessible from West Hampstead!!!!11 votesHi there.

I have passed this onto the relevant department for them to have a look at this. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

have priority seats a different colour so it helps those with visual impairments
Simple really if the seat was in bright pink which is a FIRST colour it will be more visible for those with visual impairments - this in time will help the people with priority cards such as me.

More coaches on the peak hour trains please!
This morning I caught the 06.44am from Hatfield to Kings Cross. It was made up of only 4 coaches. By the time I got on at Hatfield there were already several people standing and even more got on at Potters Bar, so the coaches were rather full with people stood in the aisles and the doorways cramped like sardines. All this whilst the heating was on full blast it seemed w hich makes things worse. I normally get the 07.31 from Hatfield which i would like to add, is a good example of what a train commute should be like.… more

Clean the trains on the Wimbledon/Sutton Loop more often.
The trains on the Wimbledon/Sutton Loop seem to be only cleaned when they get to Bedford, Luton or St Albans. I use the Farringdon to Sutton service everyday for travel to work and I never see an onboard train cleaner. It would only take one person to go through the train picking up the papers and maybe even cleaning the toilets as the trains spend about 5 minutes at Sutton.

Ergonomic seating
If/when carriages refitted, provide seats designed for the human form with sufficient leg room to avoid obligatory knee contact for those over 5ft tall.

Thank you very much for your suggestion.
I don’t think we will be refitting any of the trains we lease as we are coming up to the end of our franchise. But I hear you on the leg room, I’m only 5ft 3in and it’s not great on some of the stock we have to use!

Introduce a 1750 KGX-PBO service to help alleviate overcrowding on the 1810 KGX-PBO service.
The 1810 service is becoming more and more overcrowded; it never used to be as bad as it is now until late in 2011, when for some reason people just seemed to flock to it.
Would a sensible solution be to introduce a 1750 service in line with the current 1650 service?
I understand that there are bound to be issues around availability of drivers, capacity on the line, rolling stock, etc, but the 1810 was re-timetabled a couple of years ago as part of the "seats for all" campaign, now I'm afraid it's "seats if you're lucky".
I'm sure… more

Introduce penalties for leaving litter on the train
Make yourselves more revenue from those that spoil the trains by leaving their free paper on the floor or that half cup of coffee ready to be spilt over someones bags.
The amount of times I see people trying to sneakily drop their litter on the platform, under chairs on the train etc... when there's a bin close by you could make a small fortune in penalties that could then fund improvements and make it better for everyone.
Last week on St Pancras, there was a man who sat down and then tried to hide his apple core under the… more

Free Bus service from st albans to hatfield/wgc when there are engineering works or major incidents
When there is a major incident or engineering works on the GN line, why run the very slow, infrequently running and frustrating bus service from Ally Pally up to WGC (and it's pot luck if you get the bus that only stops at potters bar/hatfield rather than stops everywhere) - it would be much better to be able to catch the train up to st albans and get a shuttle bus (or local bus service) over to hatfield and WGC.
During a major incident, there should be an agreement with local bus services that allow free travel (on production of… more

Improve interchanges with other trains / companies (Something every operator is guilty of)
At Three Bridges a train from Horsham *Changing at Three bridges towards Brighton* can sometimes incur a long wait (And just missing an FCC train going upwards by about 2 mins) Next timetable change it might be a Great idea to plan with other TOC's to work out where passengers want to go to at what time e.g. making that train wait an additional 2 mins somewhere and asking Southern to accelerate the train into Three bridges can make all the difference!

Restore Baldock's and Ashwell's missing slow trains.
Several slow trains during the peak are formed of 8 carriages and now join/divide at Royston. In order to allow the time for this to take place, the trains skip Baldock and Ashwell. Can you instead allow time and alter the timetabling rather then denying passengers at Baldock and Ashwell use of these trains?
